Access Control Systems

Access control systems are physical or electronic systems that are designed to control whoever has access to a network. The point of the physical control system is to limit people from the outside of the door from ever gaining access unless the person from the inside of the door allow it.

There are also electronic versions that typically control network security which limits the users who are allowed to use resources on a computer system. These are extremely popular, because of how convenient it is to have an access system where only the owners of the property can control the system.

So, just to lay it out again, there are two types of access control systems (physical and electronic systems, and more) so let’s go over each type and why they are important in keeping someone safe or not.

Physical Access Control Systems: Are systems where there’s a keypad or some sort key card that can be used to get inside the doors. These are easier to use for residential properties vs. commercial properties.

Electronic Access Control Systems: Are done electronically and can be controlled by someone’s computer, or any other device that is not around at the door. These are normally used in businesses that require more security.

In some cases, physical access control systems combine with electronic ones to ensure that the safety of someone’s property is fully operational and that there is no way that someone can break-in. For example, a door can be unlocked with a swipe card, an RFID key fob, or through biometric means. Access control systems using card access systems are one the most common types of electronic door control. Hotels use this system of using a card with a magnetic stripe which can be swiped through a reader on the door being used. This type of system is easy for hotels since the cards are used temporarily.

Facilities and laboratories and other facilities requiring high security may also use a card control system, making the cards double as personal identification. That’s why access control systems are so popular, because they give the owner of the property the ability to choose who can get into their property, and the choice of doing this just makes it a lot easier.

The size of the organization and the varying levels of security which may be necessary depends on the physical access control systems within a building may be linked or standardized. The key which opens all of the doors in a building or every access point may be controlled individually.

That’s why as we explained earlies electronic systems allow an administrator to precisely define access privileges for each user. The systems also instantly update along with the system to make sure that they are more convenient to ensure that you can grant or revoke key privileges.

Another thing to think about that’s so important especially for a company that handles sensitive data is Network Security. Computer networks can be used as the access control system, and they are normally administered in a central location, and each user must be given a unique identity. Access privileges to personnel on a case by case basis can be set up by the administrator to grant access through the setting within the administration software.

For commercial businesses who want to use access control systems; there are a lot of things to think about when purchasing and getting an access control system. Depending on the size of a business there might be a lot of different users on the access control system all at once, for example like a hotel who has hundreds of people going in and out every single day. Also, another example is a bank with a large staff and customer base who will undoubtedly employ multiple access control systems to make sure that the public can’t reach the safe, and to make sure that any unauthorized staff can’t reach the automatic teller machine, and so forth.

For most small businesses though, this might be the most popular thing a business can do, because it’s a lot easier especially with the number of keys needed vs what a big business need.

For residential purposes, access controls can make everything easier than expected. Imagine never having to worry when leaving your house, of someone picking a lock and breaking-in. The only way someone can get in through these types of locks is if they know the password and can hack the system. So, basically, the only people who can get through this are the people who make access control systems.

When you are away from work, and one of your kids makes it home before you, you no longer have to worry about accidentally locking your kids out, because all they need is the password or any other entry device that comes from different kinds of access control systems. Also, with these systems in place you can say goodbye to the number of keys made for all the other places around your home.

The Future of Access Control Systems:

As this industry continues to improve the technology will improve, and as result there is more demand for these kinds of lock systems. That’s why today’s solutions have moved to mobile devices being used as the access control systems so anyone at any time can know what is going on when they aren’t home.

Bluetooth Smart technology is one of the most exciting drivers in the expansion of this industry and can also be used by just using someone’s mobile device. Also, being able to control a physical access control by being able to understand and know the identity of the person coming in before they come in is another advantage towards this technology and the whole marketplace in general as it continues to improve re
